Hi everyone.
Who manages the CoreAudio and CoreMIDI Swiki site
(
http://www.mat.ucsb.edu:8000/CoreAudio)? (I looked around on the site
and didn't see an email address.) I've recently noticed a problem with
someone (or perhaps multiple people) hijacking the site for their own
purposes, and it's beginning to really irritate me.
It seems that someone is uploading many MP3 files (and some JPEGs),
presumably to be linked to from their own site. If you go to the site
and view the recent changes, you will see that most of the recently
updated pages have had MP3 files attached to them. It is probable that
the person or persons doing this is simply using the site as a way to
store and transfer large files (including copyrighted songs) to their
friends. One would have to look at the site's log to be sure how these
files are being used.
Anyway, I've tried cleaning up the pages a little. Unfortunately, the
same features that make the swiki so good for normal use are getting in
the way here. For instance, you can't delete attachments from a page.
And if you upload an attachment with the same name, it keeps the
original as an earlier revision. The site manager is probably the only
one who can actually clean these files out.
Is it possible to completely disable the ability to attach files to the
pages? My guess is that most of the people posting real information to
the site would be able to just put any attachments on their own site
and link to there from the swiki. And besides, I don't recall seeing
any real attachments on any of the pages before this problem popped up.
I guess another solution would to somehow use the page locking system,
but I'm not sure exactly how that works, or if it is really applicable
to this problem.
The CoreAudio Swiki is such a useful repository of all the information
that we've collected here on the list over the past couple years. It is
very disappointing for me to see someone take advantage of the site for
their own selfish purposes.
Thanks
-chris
