I'm having trouble getting audio output to work on a Power Mac G5.
The problem seems to be that by default the built-in audio device
is in digital mode - see these screenshots of the Audio MIDI
Setup application:
http://spaghetticode.org/G5/
When I query the stream format from a C program, here's what I get:
mFormatID = cac3
mFormatFlags = 0x1e
mChannelsPerFrame = 2
mBytesPerPacket = 6144
mFramesPerPacket = 1536
mBytesPerFrame = 0
mChannelsPerFrame = 2
mBitsPerChannel = 16
mReserved = 0
This appears to be some sort of compressed format.
Just for completeness. This would by AC3 aka a52 dobly digital output.
It's used among others by the G5. It's the multichannel digital out.
MOTU and soncia devices have it too.
This is in use only by Apple DVD player and VLC media player (though
quite broken on the last one). Maybe some advanced commercial
applications may support it too, but I'm not sure actually.
What completely sucks about it is that it is unfinished, undocumented
and everybody seems to be just working in the dark and doing something
different. I don't think PortAudio supports it either.
VLC actually has the same problem as you seem to have. Did you solve
it? I know jack about coreaudio, but we really would like to get VLC
working on G5's. atm there is just no way we can fix it, because we
don't have the devices/developers to test this anymore.
