Still no DV Audio in panther?

It appears through some simple testing that it is still not possible to
capture audio using CoreAudio API's from a DV camcorder. Apparently there
is a legacy Sound Input manager driver for DV cameras that allows
applications using QuickTime API's to do this. But I really expected that
this legacy driver would now be obsolete with Panther. Yet, it's still
there... so us folks that have moved into modern times with the CoreAudio
API's are out of luck.
One wonders... is Apple ever planning to bring the DV driver up to par with
CoreAudio...? Any third-party alternatives?
