Just listening for the stream format to change is definitely not
enough to be a good HAL client. There are a myriad of things that can
happen that affect how the data is delivered that you really ought to
be paying attention to, not to mention the fact that audio devices
like to have a variety of streams in all sorts of configurations that
make a simple set-up like this fall down. This is why I recommended
the AU.
Just one comment about that: where is such a recommendation available in
the current documentation? I spent a lot of time exploring the
documentation about the HAL as well as the audio units and concluded
that the good way to implement things was the HAL. Apparently I was
wrong, since I appear not to be an appropriate HAL client.
I am maybe dumb about this kind of things, but I think I am not the only
one who have made the wrong choice of API to develop an audio layer for
an application. Coming from the Unix world, I probably just have to
"think different" though ;-)
my 2 (euro)-cents,
Hugues
