I may be really reaching for this, but perhaps networking problems are
part of
your audio delays?
I was playing local files at the time. I don't know whether "Time and
Date" was trying to update the time over the network or Software Update
hoped to check for updates, but I doubt it.
Ofcourse, file sharing is enabled, but at the time, I believe I didn't
connect from other computers.
I had several problems with mounted FTP servers earlier, but I wasn't
using any when the freeze occurred.
Historically, I have noticed that NEXTSTEP and Mac OS X can really
slow down
when something happens on a network which brings down servers that
your machine
has already communicated with and expects to remain available. I'm
not sure
if it is limited to NFS and/or NetInfo, but there is a trend. I also
see this
when I put my PowerBook to sleep on my network and wake it up
somewhere else:
all applications run incredibly slowly for several minutes until some
timeout
elapses. I assume that this is some sort of network timeout. The
delays I am
seeing may only happen when there are NFS-mounted share points. It
seems that
*any* disk access is delayed if an NFS share point has gone missing
unexpectedly.
I'll try and watch out for it. Thanks. :)
If you've run out of ideas, boot your machine with no network cable
attached
and run your tests again. Assuming you can recreate the Mail vs.
iTunes
glitch, see if it still happens with no network.
Sorry for the vague and possibly useless suggestion, but this gives you
something to try if you cannot narrow down the problem otherwise.
I appreciate it very much. =)
Love,
Jens
