Well, as dated in my messages to this list yesterday and Jan 5th:
How do I properly determine how many output (or input) channels
are available once I've set the CurrentDevice property on a
HALOutputUnit?
Other than setting CurrentDevice, and a ChannelMap (with
the aid of knowing the number of channels....) I think that's all
there is to it, right?
A short comment on the lack of doc:
I'd be happy to just see more comments in the headers files, such as
data types for all properties. Commented examples are also nice.
Thanks,
Jim

What documentation/features of this AU do you need to understand? I'm
still hoping to get some more docs done, but in the meantime the list
is a great forum to answer.
Please, rather than an essay/diatribe - just brief one liner points
are much better (and yes, I know we blow in this area !!! :-)

Hi James,
Well I guess I could try the mixer - but I'd like to keep my signal
path as short as possible :-) I'll try some of Jeff's suggestions in
the mean time.
The lack of doc on the HALOutputUnit is a big reason none of my apps
have an Audio selection preference.
Robert.

You might try inserting a mixer unit before the output. Numerology
does lots of connects and disconnects to the StereoMixer all the
time w/ no problems.
Or you could try using the HALOutputUnit -- but good luck
trying find any doc on it!

I've got a bug in my app where it will freeze the entire system
(except the mouse still moves). It seems to be the
DefaultOutputUnit that's getting confused, but I'm not sure what I
could have done that would cause it to block the HAL IOProc (which
is what I think causes this problem). It seems to happen when I'm
messing about attaching and detaching AudioUnits to the
DefaultOutputUnit.
Thanks for any sleuthing tips,
Robert.
