Displaying input level for user?

Hello all.
How can I present input level from microphone to user?

I am trying to implement the functionality same with the Sound/Input panel
in System Preferences, presenting an "input level" slider and some kind of
feedback to user (like the level meter, which show level bar, green then
level is normal, yellow then it approaching overload and red in the overload
zone). How could I calculate what sound level is reaching overload zone?

I am thinking to install InputProc, start the device, and do some
calculations. What would be the formulaes to calculate if sound level is
overloaded? Or may be I am overlooked the more suitable way to do it?

Thank you.
