Sound energy graphic extraction

I'm trying to get the sound energy graphic from a sound I'm playing.

My player do the following
- Open a file with a QuickTime converter
- Feed a AudioUnit output, so CoreAudio playback the sound.

I would like to get the sound energy being played, or be able to know it before playing it.
