If I remember correctly the Sonica device only outputs
multi-channel audio from an AC-3 encoded stream. If you have a
sonic and play a DVD, the DVD player can send the AC-3 encoded
data to the sonica which will render it in 5.1. AC-3 encoded data
to hardware looks like a stereo 16bit stream, which is why you see
that format in AMS. It should also show that is has a "AC-3"
non-mixable stream.
Unless OpenAL encodes the n-channel audio into AC-3, I don't think
you'll get 5.1 audio out of the sonica. What you need is a real 6
channel device like the Emi-2/6.
OK, I'll bite. What's the Emi-2/6? Sounds like I need one.
Never mind ... Google rocks:

Yeah, I looked at this before. $300... ouch. :| Oh well. At least
Blizzard's paying and not me.
Here is an emi link:

There should be a lot of multichannel USB audio devices out on the
market, but I can't seem to remember the names of them (I work on
FireWire audio which is even more expensive). Also, there should be
USB audio 5.1 speakers on the market by now under the $200.00 range.
