Newbie: Any sound coming out of the built-in speakers?

Hi everyone,

I am very new to Core Audio and I want to write a simple app that tells me whether there's any sound coming out of the built-in speakers. I've been looking for VU Meter examples but the ones I found were meters for the sound generated by the applications themselves and not for the system output. I think that the AudioDeviceRead call might be what I need, if I pass the default output as the "device". But the function looks a bit complicated, having to set the AudioTimeStamp and whatnot. Is there any code out there that does anything similar to this that I can look at? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Thomaz

p.s. My apologies if this question has already been answered here. I looked in the archives but couldn't find anything that helped me much.
