I did make a search on google ("AUEffectBase bug site:lists.apple.com")
before posting but nothing turned up for this particuliar problem, as far as
I could see. I guess I didn't search enough..

In my case, my engine supports 2 precisions for internal calculations: float
and double. I allow changing them on the fly, but then every internal buffer
needs to be converted. And big glitches obviously happens when I don't
protect this with a mutex. I don't see any alternative way to do this, but
I'll do some profiling and check if this has a noticeable impact on speed.
