I think the only sane course now is to only support a single stereo bus the AU version of any plugin (except if you detect that you're running Logic6). Anything else amounts to blind faith that the future update of Logic7 which has the fix will work with a version of your plugin which has already been released. That kind of faith obviously hasn't been rewarded thus far :-).

Most importantly, I think we should take this opportunity to do a reset on the whole multi-out issue. If we're only counting on support of a single stereo bus, then we've got a lot more freedom to revisit issues like the linkage of channel configs to a bus, proper notification from the host of bus changes, how to ensure the bus count property is in sync with the number of busses in Render(), how to more clearly distinguish between the fixed channel count and the "up to"/negative count, how to make multi-outs understandable, etc.

Bill, I sense that there are some things in multi-outs that you'd like to do differently. Let's view this discontinuity not as deep shit, but as a chance to revisit some of these issues.

To be honest I think the best solution is the following.

Publish your AU with multiple outputs, each being stereo. We've been pretty
clear for a considerable time that particularly with an AU Instrument this
is entirely expected (and recommended) for AU's that have a static config
capability. (An example of this is Art's Phatmatic Pro - its been out like
this for over a year or more)...

Then, hosts that are not supporting this will still at least give you a
single stereo output.

I realise that this is not good for you in the short term - but its been
acknowledged (graciously I might add) that this is a problem in Logic that
will be fixed.

Hi Stefan,

how about multi-bus AUs? Would they work in Logic 6.3.x, 6.4.x and 7?
How can the bus-count be made writeable?

If I use {0, 8} I get an error message in the validation tool, telling
me that the default format (2ch) does differ from the supplied format
(8ch). How do I override the default format? Any examples or
explanation which methods/properties to implement to make it work?

Cheers,
Mike

Is there any way to get a multi channel music device to work with
Logic 7?
Yes. Logic 7 does handle AUs with flexible bus count properly.
If you look into supporting something like {0,-16}, this would make it
show up.
Logic would initialize your AU to 8 stereo busses then.
