Is there an AudioUnit to normalise a recording?

I'd like to normalise an AIFF recording, that is, increase the volume
to its optimum, without causing distortion. I want to do this by
using an AudioUnit for off-line processing.

Does anybody know of an AudioUnit which can do this, and preferably
which is free, or open-source? Is there an Apple AudioUnit for this?

Thanks,
Simon
