Sorry for this off-topic intrusion but I've spent hours surfing the
web and I am not sure where else to turn for answers. If anyone knows
of a cheap (under $300 to $400) MIDI-to-DMX converter sold in the U.S.
could you contact me off list? I have seen many sold in Europe, but
some of these are way too expensive (>$1000) and some cannot be
delivered to the U.S. I am currently looking at the LanBox-LCM
(correct name?) but even that is over $400 and all I want is a way to
control my Christmas lights (synced to music) in the front yard from
my Mac with my sequencer of choice.
Durand Interstellar makes an excellent USB->DMX converter, which can be
used manually as well as programmed to run timed crossfades and
multiple cue lists standalone (no computer required).
$320, from <http://www.interstellar.com/products.html>
I have written their freeware DMX-MIDI driver for Mac OS X, which
appears in Audio MIDI Setup, and provides multiple DMX Universes as
MIDI Endpoints with Note/Controller/Sysex mappings. There is also a
command line tool, and a serial port emulation. My driver will be
available for download within two weeks, and I'll post the link here.
