Why do G5 optical inputs have more latency than analog?

I am assuming that this is an apple core audio driver issue but I am wondering why the monitoring latency using the analog inputs of the G5 with logic is 346 samples while if I use separate convertors such as those of an RME multiface the latency ends up being around 400 samples?
