There was also another post about another (similar) problem with
AUEffectBase - there was a post from K. Ware that covered this:
Subject: AUEffectBase parameter scheduling bug
- (posted Aug 16 I think)

I think we'll try to get a dot release of the SDK out shortly that has these
fixes - but in the meantime the these two email threads should get you
through these.
