Yes that's the intention...
Playback (there's a simple Default playback of a sin wave in the SDK,
there's also the afplay example code that is in the SDK in AudioFileTools
that uses an output unit) - in these examples the only difference between
AUHAL and the DefaultOutputUnit is that the DOU tracks the default device as
set by the user, whereas AUHAL lets you tell it which device to track...
