non-standard IOAudioControl

Is it possible to create a non-standard IOAudioControl in a driver and access it from user space?

From what I can see AudioDeviceGet/SetParameter doesn't allow doing this, only allowing access to the standard volume/input select IOAudioControls predefined in AudioHardware.h.

Would it be possible to access an IOAudioControl directly through the I/O Registry? If so is there any documentation for this?
