Agreed, I think MTCoreAudio is fabulous - why doesn't Apple incorporate it already! :) But for the purposes of reading an AIFF file it will only help with part of it. I feel wrong suggesting Michael write wrappers around the rest of CoreAudio considering the free work he put into MTCoreAudio, but it'd sure be nice.

There is one way around it, you could use Michael Thornburgh's
MTCoreAudio.framework to access CoreAudio from Cocoa without diving too deeply
into the CoreAudio API. It's somewhere along the spectrum between NSSound and
full-on CoreAudio. I cannot speak to how well it caters to a developer that is
just learning Cocoa. I'm not endorsing any particular approach, but there are
a number of options available.
