Chain of Audio Units and Sample Rate

Hi,
Is it possible for an apple's au mixer unit to handle multiple au converter units which are converting different sample rates into a 441000 and inputing those frames of audio into the mixer, and lastly sending these frames to the default output unit? My recent design and implementations are telling me this is not possible. I can have multiple inputs to a mixer with the same sample rate where all units in the design and chain must have the same sample rate. Actually, it appears that all au's must have the same sample rate no matter how they are arranged and connected, except for the default output unit's output connection which is always 441000. Have I analyzed this correctly?
