Hello Jeff, thanks for your reply. I guess I was subconsciously thinking
too much like a Windows driver developer, and so this did not occur to me
(Windows DDK has several OS environments).

Drivers and other IOKit/kernel things are general only forward
compatible. That is, you can build it on Panther and expect it to run
on Tiger, but not vice versa. My understanding is that it has to do
with the linkage and what not that is particular to each kernel
version, but I'm not entirely sure.
