That being said, we will look into the feasibility of a mechanism
whereby a view can request a new view size from the host. Remember it
will still be up to the host to determine whether it wants to honor
the request.
The most important thing to remember is that it will be a request,
and that the plug-in should be able to deal with a host which refuses
the request.
I noticed, for example, that in 10.4, both Mail and XCode lost their
drawers. (oops, I just noticed that for a Brit that's a double
entendre!) I infer from this that Apple has decided that "normal"
users are less happy with windows that resize for "unusual" reasons
than techies are. We techies need to keep that in mind.
BUT, if Apple are looking into the feasibility of more communication
between the host and the plug-in -- there is a slippery slope of
other things to consider.
For example, undo. Should the plug-in participate in the host's undo
history? If so, we need a defined protocol; if not, the plug-in's UI
needs something else - for example a whole lot of undo buttons on
individual controls, which is pretty bad (but not as bad as not
having undo at all!)
If the plug-in needs file operations, e.g. for more sophisticated
handling of voice files than is provided by presets (importing audio
samples from other apps, etc.), should it be able to interact with
the host's file menu, or do it via command buttons in its own window?
And so on, and so forth.
