Bill,
From AudioFormat.h and AudioHardware.h, there are the defined
constants
kAudioFormatProperty_ChannelName
This property is for fetching the name of a channel in a particular
surround sound setup defined in an AudioChannelLayout struct.
kAudioDevicePropertyChannelName
This property is to get the name of a particular channel on a piece
of hardware.
The purpose is to allow an application to get the channel name for
a particular channel on an audio device.
You would use kAudioDevicePropertyChannelName to get this
information. However, this property is not required to be implemented
by the hardware, so you need to be prepared for it's absence.
If the device supports channel naming, would it be reasonable to
assume that
a. CoreAudio would take the channel name from the device.
b. If changes are made to the channel name(s) on the device, the
device is responsible for recording the changes.
c. Is there a public API that would enable HAL clients to alter the
channel name? Or does this responsibility fall to
a custom driver and user client?
There is no API that allows an application to persistently tag a
channel on a device with a name or any other pieced of information.
Thanks,
David

I'm not sure what you mean? What channels, where?

Hi,
Does the CoreAudio Toolbox provide a means to make persistent
changes to channel names?
Thanks,
David
