AUHAL and changing input/output devices "on the fly"

Hello all.
I am using two AUHAL, one for input and one for output.
I need to handle "hot-switch" of input/output devices, both physical (then user pulling out the plug) and logical (then user select another device while sound i/o is in progress)

What would be the best strategies to implement such functionality?
Should i repeat the aproach i did with HAL, installing "Device gone" and "system device changed" notifiers, and manualy assigning another device to the AUHAL?
Which level of re-initialization should i perform on such switch? Is AudioOutputUnitStop/AudioOutputUnitStart is enought or I should perform whole deinitialization/reinitialization?
Thank you.
