DataSourceName notification?

when a headphone is plugged in, the data source name is "Headphones" instead of "Internal speakers" on my G5 Dual 2GHz.

i added a kAudioDevicePropertyDataSourceNameForIDCFString property listener, but i didn't get any notification when i plug in and out a headphone. am i using the listener wrong or is it not supposed to get a notification for whatever reason? is there any other way to get a notification when the user plugs in and out a headphone?
