I really don't know anything specific about this function that you are calling but I would venture to guess that both buffers must be Altivec (8 byte) aligned to work.

That’s 16-byte, which is what malloc() will give you.

I noticed that there’s an unused allocation, buffer_r, in the posted snippet. Dunno whether it was supposed to be used for something.
