We've defined a new AU type called AUGenerator ('augn') that is a
perfect candidate for tone generators as you describe.
In the near future (Tiger has a developer app that will do this - AU
Lab) there will be host apps that will be able to work with these new
types of AU's
- In the meantime, you could maybe write out some sound files with
these tones in them and use them as your audio source.
Then your distortion filter would be an AU that is an effect unit
('aufx') - many apps already host these today...

I would like to create an application that generates different test
tones and then runs them through different distortion filters so that
the audio can be tested by some testing hardware. Would it be
appropriate to create Audio Units to generate the tones and
distortion filters? If this is an appropriate solution, where would
I begin to find information on how to play an Audio Unit or Audio
Unit chain? Thanks in advance.
