It seems the most straightforward solution is to create the /Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/<Mfr>/Images directory and put your icon there rather than in your driver's bundle. Otherwise it would seem necessary to add a 'Reset to Manufacturer Default Icon', which seems clumsy.


Sidebar: Also note that users can put icons in ~/Library/Audio/<Mfr>/Images and those will show up in AMS as well.
