In my application Isadora, I would like to be able to manipulate the location of a QuickTime movie's sound on a multi-channel sound output device connected to multiple (i.e., more than 2) speakers.

Why don't you just use the Movie Audio Extraction APIs? Then you'll get the audio and you can route it to your hearts content.

A couple of URLs for you to try:
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/Conceptual/ QT7UpdateGuide/Chapter02/chapter_2_section_6.html>
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/APIREF/ ModifyingMovieProperties.htm> (do a search for Extraction)
