We've been able to get this working fine with the afconvert tool in
the SDK. Have you tried that? (We'll also look into some basic file
writing code as well, but it would be useful to get this information)

I ended up switching to the ExtAudioFile, but I'm *still* unable to
successfully write an m4a file. The file creates fine and it grows
in size as I add data to it, but the Finder reports the length as
zero and I can't play it in QuickTime Player or iTunes.
