I personally do not like these build style directory things at all.
So, to turn them off:
The easiest way to set the value of this preference is to use the
command line tool, defaults like this:
% defaults write com.apple.Xcode UsePerConfigurationBuildLocations
-bool no
There's also a preference somewhere in the pref pane that can turn
these off as well

I've debugged with Xcode without needing the AU to be in the build
directory (although perhaps there are some bugs with it that I just
haven't encountered). Also, I just make Xcode place the built AU
into the
right place and don't use symlinks.
That's what I used to do prior to Xcode 2.x. I would set the
build directory to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and the AU
would get built right to that location. The problem is now that
even with the very same setting, Xcode insists on creating a sub-
folder named after the build configuration (Development,
Deployment etc). Thus the AU's can't get built directly to the
Components folder. Anyone know a trick for overriding this?
Create a build style named "Components", and set the build
directory to ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins. ;)
