AUGraph efficiency?

In my application, I want a very simple AU graph that is essentially an
input unit that I feed the audio samples to, an output unit, and
optionally one or more effects units in between.

What is the overhead of having additional audio units in the graph?
If there much cost to having a 2-node graph (for code simplicity)
when I could actually be using a single output unit?
