capacity sensor to virtual midi

Hi there

I'm a visual artist and I'm working with quartz coposer a lot. A
couple of weeks ago, in a stroke of luck I got a experimental
sensor-interface from the technical university Delft in the
Netherlands. This capacity sensor is able to sense the position of my
naked hand in space (x,y,z) with a range of 100 steps in every
direction. It works with a rs232 interface, so I bought the keyspan
rs232 to usb converter and now I'm able to communicate with it using
macromedia director. I found out it works very stable and precize.
The only problem is I use quartz composer and other programs to create
my visuals and not Director. So i'd like to make a little program that
communicates with the sensor and converts it's data to a virtual
midi-port. I'm a newbie programmer and I believe it's possible to
create such a program using developer tools, but I got no clue where
to start. Because Midi is part of core audio I decided to pose this
question over here in the hope you could send me in the right
direction to start my programming journey.

In short: I need to find out how to communicate with the device using
developer tools and how to create a virtual midi port in order for my
programs to get the data.

with regards,
Matthias Oostrik
