The error you are describing below is a limitation of the ConvertFile tool - it originally just does a PCM to compressed conversion...

ExtAudioFile works with any format that is appropriate/legal for a supported file type.

afconvert works just fine for instance.... (which is the follow on to ConvertFile). It wouldn't be too hard to enhance the ConvertFile example to correctly write linear pcm (exercise for the reader)

Greetings to all,

I'm just experimenting with the ConvertFile example. I also found the
"Using the Audio Toolbox" Intoduction where example code for gathering
the available file format and the available compression format.

What I'm currently missing is a way to gather information on what file
formats do match with the compression formats for which file
extensions. Is this information available/gatherable at runtime or
does an application have to know, which formats are supported ?

I successfully wrote an 'caff' file with 'alac' codec with an adapted
example. But some experimentation showed, that ExtAudioFileWrite
fails with some combinations of file format and codecs (as for me did
'WAVE' with 'lpcm' ). The error I got is -66567 aka
kExtAudioFileError_MaxPacketSizeUnknown.

So long,
Martin
