mono output playing out left speaker only (10.2.8)

I'm setting up the V2 default audio output unit (auou/def /appl) and am setting its input format to 44.1 kHz 16-bit mono PCM and the output is only coming out the left speaker. Later versions of the output unit accept the kAudioOutputUnitProperty_ChannelMap property which I can use to say "play channel 1 out speaker 1 & 2" to have the output unit take care of things for me. This doesn't seem to work on 10.2.8 (I think the error was kAudioUnitErr_InvalidProperty but I'm not sitting in front of the 10.2.8 machine at the moment).
In Tiger, it seems that setting the channel map property isn't even necessary b/c mono input data plays out both L/R speakers.
Is there something I can do, other than setting the input format to stereo and replicating the data myself, to make this work on 10.2.8?
thanks, stephen
P.S. I found a similar post about this in the archives but the suggested solution was to set the channel map property which won't work for me here.
