OpenAL support for 8 channels?

  • Subject: OpenAL support for 8 channels?

Hello,

I was wondering whether the OpenAL implementation on OS X supports 8 channels when the Audio Midi Setup is set to Octagonal?

As far as I knew, the 3DMixer AU only supported up to 5.0 channel output.

However, there is this intriguing line on the opendarwin site's OpenAL readme:
ALC_RENDER_CHANNEL_COUNT_MULTICHANNEL   (try and render to the maximum speakers possible by interrogating the device)
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.4.2/OpenAL-8/READ_ME

So what is the upper limit of number of channels that OpenAL implementation on OS X can render to?  (not counting any kind of upmixing from 5.0 to greater numbers of channels)

thanks,
Nick
