notifying host of parameter changes

I'm having difficulty recording automation with my AU in Logic Pro 7.1.1 -
playing back automation drawn into the track seems to work fine however.

What is the mechanism that a plugin's carbon view (or the AU itself) uses to
notify the host that the user has changed a parameter via the GUI and to
record the automation? anyone got an example?
