I too would like to know the answer to this question. There's another component based on the OGG one that may have more info, tho I don't know. It does LAME. It's here:
http://www.pyehouse.com/lynn/lamework.php
with an updated version here that has many more options and includes the latest LAME:

Hi,

Like many (many many!) people out there I'm impatient for first-class Ogg/FLAC support in iTunes and elsewhere in OS X. Being a bit of a hacker I decided to wade in and see how tough it would be to build it myself. Looking at the archives from this list I came across this (slightly edited) message:
http://lists.apple.com/archives/coreaudio-api/2005/Aug/msg00203.html

    """
We have components both for Audio Files - AudioFileComponent, and
Audio Data = AudioCodec. If these components were done then both
these files and the data they contain could be used with the
CoreAudio API and with QT (though for the short term you'd also
need a Movie 'EAT ' and 'SPIT' component(s))
    """

Looking at the APIs in question, I can definitely handle AudioFileComponent and AudioCodec -- I think I could get something going there in a reasonable amount of time. The eat/spit stuff, OTOH, is a complete disaster. I looked at the code from http://qtcomponents.sf.net (which seems to supply EAT and SPIT components) and my head promptly exploded.

So my questions are:
1. Roughly how long is "the short term" for which the eat/spit components will be necessary?
2. If there's no avoiding it, where can a guy find a decent intro to writing components of this sort?

Thanks,
