afrecord example consumes memory, why?

Hi,
When I run the "afrecord" example with
test.m4a -f m4af -d "aac " -b 128000 -q 127
as command line arguments
and watch it in the Activity Monitor,
it's memory use is increased all the time.
Not so if I record a plain AIFF file.
Is this normal?
I'm using Tiger 10.4.2 and CoreAudioSDK 1.4.2
