What causes an ioErr (-36) when calling AudioFileReadBytes()? The call works fine on very small files, but on bigger files (even as small as a 26MB aiff) I get that error in addition to a non-traceable crash.

IIRC, -36 is generally bad news — a low-level I/O error caused by disk/disc corruption or damaged media. Maybe you need to wipe that CD gently with a damp cloth in a radial motion?
