In short, on behalf of the Mac OS user experience, I strongly regard this is
a high priority enhancement. From that thread, it's not clear what the
actual and underlying basis is for not having this functionality in the
coreaudio API. According to that thread, shipping software using
expert-level Mac OS hacks is the recommended solution (which, IMHO is crazy,
not to mention not even possible for developers that aren't Mac OS gurus).
I don't see how that's any different than shipping software that relied on
private GrafPort fields or something back in the day.
If you want this feature, our only hope is to file a radar request --
there's no other way to be heard.
