mono->stereo effects, input gain handling and bypass

Hello,

I was wondering what the 'correct' way of handling input gain was on a mono->stereo effect in order to have it maintain the same perceived loudness. Or whether this is necessary at all.

Most plug-ins I've tried just seem to duplicate the input signal twice, hence the track in question appears to get louder in the mix on insertion of a mono->stereo plug-in. This is not necessarily a problem if it's the expected behaviour, it just seems a bit odd to me.

If I was to reduce the input volume to compensate then I guess I'd have to do this on bypass as well which would be a bit of a headache...
