Format Converter problem

I am having a bit of trouble with a FormatConverter AU. I have a VariRate converter set up to pull on the Format converter and all is well when the VariRate converter playback rate is set <= 1.0. When playback is even slightly greater than 1.0, I get a -10874 error (too many samples to render) returned from the FormatConverter. I am guessing that the FormatConverter is allocating some internal memory in support of an internal FIR or similar filter and by increasing the playback rate of VariRate, I am now exceeding the number of frames that the FormatConverter had previously allocated to handle the render request.
When does (if my assumption is correct) the FormatConverter allocate it's internal memory? Does it use the first render request as a size gauge? How can I get it to allocate 5 to 10% more to allow for changes from my down stream VariRate converter, or is there some way to tell it how much to allocate before I initialize the AU?
Thanks,
