using the music player for playing audio files

Are the Music Player and Sequencer meant to be used for purely multi-track audio
file arrangements? I know it's definitely for midi arrangements and AU events,
but I'm not sure about it's relation to "sample accurate" file playback...I
could imagine a scenario where user events trigger the playback of audio files,
but this doesn't seem ideal.

I am trying to figure the general mechanism that systems like pro tools and
cubase use to to do this. I am somewhat familiar with how Ardour does it.

Is coreaudio a good platform to implement a relatively plain implementation of
mutli-track audio playback?

thanks
