Since you have no idea where the spike comes from, I would not rule out the possibility that it has nothing to do with this code. Shark is going to pretty much going to be the only way to track down what's going on. One thing you might need to do is to edit the profile so that it is sampling more often. I often adjust the sampling down to every hundred microseconds or so when I'm looking for fine grained problems.
