Hello all,
I still haven't used every feature of AudioUnits, and I find myself thinking
about parameter changes, scheduling, and the advantages and disadvantages of
MIDI.
My current understanding is that there is no way to schedule a parameter
change beyond the current buffer being rendered in an AU. However, CoreMIDI
supports time stamps on the messages which and not so limited. Since
AudioUnits have some degree of MIDI I/O, it seems that CoreMIDI allows for
easier scheduling. At the same time, though, MIDI is generally considered too
coarse (7-bit or 14-bit) for many parameters that affect audio. AU offers ways
to change the audio with more accuracy than MIDI, but then the scheduling
limitations come in.
Could anyone shed more light on this situation? Am I missing a few pieces of
the picture and it isn't so bad of a tradeoff? I know there are a few people
who find MIDI more than adequate for their VST, so I don't need to hear that
perspective again. I really want to know what the folks who want to go beyond
MIDI are dealing with in terms of AudioUnits.
Thanks,
Brian Willoughby
