Newbie sound input help (or, why _can't_ you do it in this context?)

OK, I am trying to use CoreAudio to record a sound. I think I have things set up correctly, sort of like in TN2091. I can initialize and start my audio unit without error, and the input callback that I specify fires with great regularity. The problem is that when I call AudioUnitRender, it always returns -10863, which is, of course, kAudioUnitErr_CannotDoInCurrentContext, which means.... Ok, I have no idea what it means. Does anybody have a handle on what sorts of problems can cause this error?

Thanks,

John
