Hi,
The parameter inNumFrames passed to Render() appears to change very
rarely.
In normal usage yes.
e.g. on AULab it seems to be constant at 512 and in Live it seems
to be constant at 128 if I recall correctly.
It will change in AULab (and in Live I would presume) based on the
size of the I/O - have a look at (and change) the number of frames of
I/O in AULab in the Audio Device preference tab.
When exactly does the inNumFrames value change and can it be
assumed to be constant between initialisations of an audio unit?
It can change at any time - it can never be larger than your AU's max
frames setting whilst an AU is initialised, but it can be smaller.

If it can change (i.e. an Audio unit may be asked to render 512
frames, then 128, then 417) what is gained by this in context of
the design of the AU framework?
