Hey guys, thanks for all the help.
I reinstalled XCode and everything is working fine. I guess something must have gone wrong during my initial installation.

I think the files you are seeing - the .pbxproj file - is a file
(probably called project.pbxproj) that shouldn't be seeing in the
Finder at least. That should be contained in a directory that ends
with .xcodeproj - in the case you mention this is
SinSynth.xcodeproj.
This directory should be appearing in the finder as if it were a file
(it is what we call a bundled file - another example of these are
rtfd "files") and thus you should be able to double click on these
(the xc.... "file") and that should launch XCode and open up the
project you clicked on. Trying to open the .pbxproj file directly
doesn't work.
If you are *not* seeing these .xcodeproj as files in the Finder, but
rather seeing them as directories, then there is something wrong with
your install - I'd suggest bringing that up on the XCode support list.
