introduction to CoreAudio APIs

Can anyone here recommend an introduction to which CoreAudio calls are needed to implement simple file audio file playback? I'm looking for something roughly at the level of the old Sound Manager SndFileStartPlay , but with the potential for AudioUnit effetcs and so on. Apple's site doesn't seem to have an overview.
